Asking for what company this is?

If I was given a phone number without being told whose number it was, but most likely it's some company's or formal institution's number. How should I ask them what company this is or to whom this number belongs, if I were to call on that number?
    Thank you!

That's an unusual situation, and many companies and individuals would (understandably) be reluctant to divulge such information to total strangers, especially in this age of rampant (solicited and otherwise) telephone sales calls.

I suggest you call the number, introduce yourself and explain why you are calling, and then perhaps ask who that number belongs to.

In what circumstances were you given a number without being told whose it was? As teechar said, this is an unusual situation.

Re: Asking for what company this is?

I had sent my resumè to several different companies at the same time and a friend of mine, who was as a "go between". He called me and gave me a number and said they want me for an interview but unfortunately he forgot the name of that company so I wanted to know how can I ask formally and politely whose or which company number it was.

Re: Asking for what company this is?

Are you asking your friend for the name of the company, or are you planning to phone the company and ask who they are? Bear in mind that whoever answers the phone will almost certainly give the name of the company in the first couple of words so you'll know who they are!
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

If you enter the phone number in a search, you may well bring up the name of the company and avoid the issue.

You can Google reverse number lookup or reverse white pages to find services that will try to identify US phone numbers for you. I don't know if this service is available internationally. Practically speaking, just googling the phone number will probably find the company.
