sleep on the mattress or sleep on the floor?

When you have an extra mattress and put it on the floor and sleep on it instead of on the bed, would you call yourself "sleeping on the mattress" or sleeping on the floor"?

And, should it be "sleeping on the mattress" or "sleeping in the mattress"?

Child: I don't want to sleep on the bed. I want to sleep on the mattress.

Parent: The bed has a mattress. What you mean is you want to sleep on the floor.

Child: No, I don't want to sleep on the floor. The floor is cold.

It could be either one. If the mattress is on the floor you could say you are sleeping on the mattress or on the floor. Or both.

Re: sleep on the mattress or sleep on the floor?

I would say I am sleeping on the mattress.

    Two more things.

    1. I call myself Ron.
    2. No comma after "and" here.

One last thing. We usually put a blanket or two on the floor before sleeping there. However, we still call it sleeping on the floor.

In Japan, I have slept on futon mattresses on the floor, and I would consider it to be sleeping on a mattress rather than the floor.
