    Pensioners took to the streets

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

Pensioners took to the streets demanding higher pensions, but instead of them, they received brutal beatings.

Re: Pensioners took to the streets

No, that sentence doesn't work. Try:

Pensioners took to the streets demanding higher pensions, and they were beaten for their trouble.
