What does it matter if it so happened that I retrieved something (the sentence does not tell us what) for you?
'Retrieve' carry lots of meanings; I need to see the text to know what it refers to.

Retrieve doesn't matter for me. I only wonder why we used the "were to retrieve" in place of "retrieved"

    Thaks for your help...

Well, the sentence is not passive one, so you don't care about that.

'Be to infinitive' has lots of meanings such as a purpose, a result, a cause and so on. I recommend you to look it for in your grammar book.

    Re: What if....

Thanks but couldn't we use the "retrieved" in place of "were to retrieve"??? Aren't they the same?
