    In the class photo

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural. I have tried to use "stand out". I am not sure if I have placed "to the right" correctly.

    1. In the class photo, James stood out to the right, with his tall figure and long dark hair.

It makes more sense that way.

    teechar,

Thank you, but I am wondering if I wanted to be precise and mention the exact place where James stood, would "to the right " be correct as I wrote it in my sentence.

Do you mean "stood" instead of "stood out?"

    Re: In the class photo

Maybe my sentence is unclear. I wanted to say that James stood to the right in the photo, but he was noticeable because of his tall statue and long hair. I used "stood out" meaning noticeable.
Your version of my sentence is perfect, only I wanted to add his position, "to the right. "

    It's "stature" not "statue."

    Re: In the class photo

    teechar,
This sentence is a good example how a sentence can become unclear only because I used the wrong preposition "to" instead of "on" I believed that they can be interchangeable in the most cases, but apparently that is not the case. I have to do more exercises with "on the right" or to the right" to get a better understanding how to use them properly.

    Re: In the class photo

I don't actually think the version with "to" is wrong as such. I just think the sentence is clearer with "on."

    Re: In the class photo

In the photo, James stood/was on the right, standing out due to his height and [very] dark hair.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
