    John spent the whole day

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural.

John spent the whole day fitting together an IKEA bed frame. When he finally succeeded, he was so angry that he wanted to smash it to pieces.

I don't see why he was so angry. That second sentence doesn't seem to connect with the first.
Note that you can use "assembling" instead of "putting together" in the above.

    teechar,
He was angry because he spent the whole day assembling a bed frame which usually should take not more than 30 minutes. IKEA is famous for their instruction manuals, which often frustrate people. Maybe I should write my second sentence like this:

When he finally succeeded, exhausted and frustrated, he was so angry that he wanted to smash it to pieces.

You could also use "felt like smashing" instead of "wanted to smash" in the above.

    Thank you teechar,

"Felt like smashing" is the word I needed. But unfortunately I could not come upon it when I needed it, although I heard it and read it many times.

    (Slightly) Off-Topic

I am a founder member of the IKEA Assemblers Support Group, We are a bit like the Samaritans in that we offer help and support for people on the verge of suicide, but we restrict our support to those in despair as a direct result of attempting to follow the instructions in IKEA booklets.

We get thousands of calls a day!

The most common cause of suicidal frustration is the apparently simple Billy bookcase. Allowing thirty minutes for its assembly, people generally spend three or four days at it. They finally get it together, set it against the wall, meticulously fix the safety strap at the top (sometimes demolishing half an internal wall in the process), sort their books and arrange them splendidly on the shelves, and then stand back to admire their efforts - only to realise that they have put the bottom shelf in back to front, and have to start all over again. I'm sorry to admit that we lose to suicide 83% of callers with that problem. The remaining 17% become alcoholics, heavy smokers, or go insane.

Our local psychiatric hospital in Prague has a dedicated IKEA ward. It's not very successful - they are still trying to assemble the beds.

Wouldn't he feel some relief at managing to assemble it?

Re: John spent the whole day

    Tdol,
Once I bought an IKEA desk chair. I put it together and noticed that one large screw was missing. I called my local IKEA and told them about the screw and asked if it was possible to get a one from the shop, but the woman who answered my phone told me they do not have any spare parts. I should reassemble the chair, put it back in its original packaging, and bring it back to the shop. So I did what she told me, and went again to the shop and had to change buses twice to get there. I think I do not have to describe to you how I felt when I came home with a new chair and had to do the same job again.

Do you mean 'I had to disassemble the chair'?
    I am not a teacher.
