    not a few

    a. This is a movie with not a few violent scenes in it
Does this mean: this movie has many violent scenes in it.?

    b. He has not a few friends.

Does this mean: He has many friends.?

To me (b) means he has many friends, but

    c. He doesn't have a few friends.

simply contradicts 'He has a few friends.'

As far as I can see (c) could be followed with 'He has a great number of friends.' or 'He doesn't have any friends at all' or 'He has only one friend' or....

    Many thanks
