    Casals

The following close test is quite puzzling to me. I donít fully understand it in detail. I have answered the questions. Please help me correct the errors. Thanks a lot.

Casalsí whole concept of intonation and articulation was not only of great importance to string players but influenced me tremendously both about playing the piano and about music. Casals was of great importance in ___1___ we call expressive intonation, namely not well-tempered intonation. He made me very conscious of the geographical position of the notes, ___2___ there are certain notes that give a feeling of pulling in a certain direction going down, and that ___3___ have a pushing feeling, going up. This is something which on the piano, of course, you cannot do, but if your ear is made aware of the expressive intonation ___4____ the well-tempered intonation, you balance your hands and the chords that you play on the piano to compensate with intensity ___5___ what you cannot change in flexibility of pitch. This is a lesson that Casals taught musicians in his time, and it is a lesson that is very important in all tonal music.

    Re: Casals

I could see for #3 either "others" or "the others." If all notes are either "up" or "down" then "the others" is correct. If there are some notes that are neither up or down, then "others" is the correct choice.
