What's the exact meaning of the "Call" in this context?

I can't locate the exact definition from dictionary as it has too much explanation.

    Re: Call Auction

Call is functioning as an attributive noun, modifying "auction". I don't know the origin of the term but it would have made sense to its originators. Today you should know the compound noun call auction if you're in circumstances that warrant knowing it. Most people will never encounter the term.

    Re: Call Auction

With the information RJ has provided, we can start to answer the original question: in the term call auction, "call" appears to be short for call option. This answer just kicks the can, though, because it raises the follow-up question What's the exact meaning of the word "call" in this context?
