    what does this part...

    Which are correct:

    1) What do you think this part belongs to?

    2) What do you think this is a part of?
    3) What do you think this part is to?
    4) What do you think this is a part to?
    5) What object's part do you think this is?
    6) What thing's part do you think this is?

I assume that someone has found a part of a machine or something of the sort and has no clue what object that part belongs to.
He is asking someone else if they know.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    Re: what does this part...

    3) and 4) are not correct. 5) and 6) are unlikely. 1) and 2) are fine.

I would consider using a phrase with from.

I think 'belongs in' is possible in 1 according to definition #1 at http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/belong

I don't have any problems with the first four. The last two are unnatural.

How would you use #3 and #4?

Numbers 3 and 4 are wrong. You can ask What does this part go to.
    I am not a teacher.

    Where does this part go?
Is it possible to use this sentence when repairing something?

    I agree with GoesStation.

With the "what do you think" part included, we would -- before "to" -- actually station "goes."

What do you think this part goes to?

Yes. If you do a particularly good job, you end up with a small box of parts for which the answer is "I don't know, but it seems to be working fine without it."
    I am not a teacher.

    Re: what does this part...

    I'd use #2.

Yes, using "goes" is a good idea.

The only one that really alarms me is #6. "Thing's part"? Creepy!
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
