    Is the phrase the pick and flower of still in usage in English?

    I wasn't even aware that it was ever used in English. I see that Dickens used it, but I had never heard it until your post.

    I came across it in De "Profundis", a story by A.C.Doyle.

    But for this a price must be paid, and the price is a grievous one. As the beast of old must have one young, human life as a tribute every year, so to our Empire we throw from day to day the pick and flower of our youth.

    So that makes two Victorian-era British writers, which leads me to think it's both BrE and outdated, but others will have to confirm.
