    He's struggled with substance abuse

Dear Annie: I have a real problem with my 52-year-old son, "Robert," who is cross-addicted. He's struggled with substance abuse since he was 14 years old. Years ago, he got sober for a stretch of five years, so I know he is capable of getting clean. But he's using now.

    Hi,
I think "He's struggled" in the above stands for "He has struggled," but I doubt whether "He has" can really be abbreviated as "He's." So should the original "He's ..." be rewritten as "He has ...?" Thanks.

"has" is commonly abbreviated in an identical way to "is". It is standard everyday usage.

Don't use it in formal writing, but it's fine in other contexts.
