    Pre and ancient history

Can I shorten "Prehistory and ancient history" to "Pre and ancient history"?

    Re: Pre and ancient history

I think pre- and ancient history is fine, with the hyphen.

It doesn't work for me. I'd want the second term in the pair to be hyphenated like the first, as in pre- and post-haircut counseling.

    Re: Pre and ancient history

I think it'll work. It's not in the sentence; it's headline in the TOC of a web page, and because of the narrow containter (available space), I have to shorten the headline.

So if one english teacher understands the meaning, the masses will too.

But if it's usually not in the spirit of the English language (is that the expression?), I'll try not to use it in normal sentences.

Thank you for your opinion, GS.

Given the space constraint, it's fine. Everyone who cares will understand it.
