As a saw a child balancing

I am not sure if my sentences sound natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

As I saw a child balancing on a bridge parapet, panic gripped me. I instinctively stretched out my hands to hold it, although there were at least a dozen meters between us.

Re: As a saw a child balancing

Write the parapet of a bridge. It's not clear what the it in the second sentence refers to; or rather, it's clear you mean the child, but the reader's likely to wonder "why did the speaker want to hold the parapet?" We don't usually refer to children as it anymore. Can you revise the text to avoid both that usage and the ambiguity?

    GoesStation,
I really did not know that you do not use "it" to refer to a child anymore. What kind of a pronoun can you use if you are talking about a child and you do not know if it is a girl or a boy?

    Here is my second try:
As I saw a child balancing on the parapet of the bridge, panic gripped me. I instinctively stretched out my hands to hold the child, although there were at least a dozen meters between us.
