After hours of a heated discussion

I am wondering if my sentence makes sense in English. Would you please correct my mistakes?

After hours of a heated discussion with his bosses, John felt as if someone had taken away 10 year of his life.

Lose the indefinite article and pluralize years and your sentence will be okay.

Right. I'd also spell out ten.

You'd want the indefinite a if you said something like:

    - after a heated discussion that went on for hours
    - after a long, heated discussion
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
