Sheila married her best friend's husband

Would you please correct the mistakes in my sentences?

Sheila married her best friend's husband. Her new marriage was a success, but she constantly suffered from pangs of conscience. She got a lovely man but lost a great friend.

Sheila's new husband is a bigamist! Sad.

    You may have meant ex-husband.

    GoesStation,

I wrote "her best friend's husband," believing that it is understandable that the man had obtained a divorce first. He could not officially marry another woman and live in a bigamy, at least not in the EU. I have heard on the UK radio stations people talking about marrying her best friend's husband, and therefore I used the same phrase.

It might be okay in British English. If they're divorced, he's not her husband anymore. Ex-husband is correct and natural. Husband is neither.

Informally, we often just say ex: He asked me a lot of questions about my ex.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

Re: Sheila married her best friend's husband

American legal jurisdictions are highly diffuse. It would be easy to commit bigamy here by getting married in more than one state or even in different counties of the same state. Cases come to light from time to time, but there are probably far more that are never discovered.

When the very famous American journalist Charles Kuralt died, two widows came forward. He had lived mostly on the road for years - his program was called On the Road - and he maintained two families, each unaware of the other, in different states.

It isn't. Sheia can run off with her best friend's husband, seduce him, make love to him, live with him, etc, but she can't marry him.

    That's odd - I've never heard that.

I heard it on a talk radio when people call in. But probably I missed the word "ex."
