I did not know if I could try to eat

Would you please correct the mistakes in my sentence? I am not sure if my punctuation is correct. I have used a comma before "or", but I am not sure if a comma is optional in this sentence.

I did not know if I could try to eat the tough piece of meat, or throw it in the bin, or give it to the dog.

Re: I did not know if I could try to eat

I would remove the first "or". It will still be clear that you have three options to choose from. I would use a comma before "or give it to the dog".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

It's not one of your better sentences. For a start, why are you using could?

Re: I did not know if I could try to eat

    jutfrank,
I really do not know why I used "could". Sometimes sentences appear in my mind after reading a text in a book, or a word gives an idea for a sentence. I cannot give you a rational explanation. I try to post those sentences on this forum to see if they are grammatically correct. If you did not point out "could" I would not have noticed the mistake. But I am still not sure which word should I use instead. Could I write instead:

I did not know if I should try to eat the tough piece of meat, throw it in the bin, or give it to the dog.
