    The tentacles of the state

I have tried to use "tentacles" in my sentence. Would you please correct my mistakes?

The tentacles of the state seemed to have spread to all parts of society, even to the private lives of its citizens.

Re: The tentacles of the state

It's okay, but I would probably use "reach" instead of "spread" in that sentence. Are you sure you want "seemed" rather than "seem"? Also, "its" isn't needed.

    teechar,
Thank you again. I will write again my sentence with your corrections.

The tentacles of the state seem to have reached all parts of society, even to the private lives of citizens.

    Drop the second "to".

I agree. Tentacles can spread, but in this context I think the emphasis should be more on reaching and grasping.

I think you could also use the word "penetrate" if it is meant to describe an intrusion.
I am not a teacher or a native speaker.
