    A debated decision, having lost

"A debated decision in the 53rd minute shattered any hopes of the Gunners becoming the first side in Champions League history to overturn a four-goal deficit, having also lost the first leg in Germany 5-1."

    This sentence is from http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/39152642

Is that a grammatically wrong sentence?
Since the subject is "a decision", it cannot be the logic subject to the clause "having also lost the first leg in Germany 5-1" where "a decision" can't lost in a game.

Re: A debated decision, having lost

I think you're right. It's certainly convoluted and strange. Instead of "having also lost," I would have said "since they had also lost."
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.

lagoo, always state the source of any text you quote, please.

The original sentence sounds perfectly good to me for a sports report. It's completely understandable by anybody interested in football and I see no need to pull it to pieces.

I think disputed decision or debatable decision would work better than debated decision.
