which object relates to "them" in a sentence?

    Hi!

    I have a sentence -

One final observation for this section: As the subject of repurchases has come to a boil, some people
have come close to calling them(1) un-American – characterizing them(2) as corporate misdeeds that divert funds
    needed for productive endeavors.

There are two pronouns "them" (them1 and them2) in the sentence. I can't relate both of them with the objects that they replace. Therefore I can't understand the idea of the sentence.

    Thanks for your answer!

I have thought that the noun-phrase "the subject of repurchases" is singular and there is even verb "has" that goes after the noun-phrase.

I see. But you can see that the sentence is about repurchases, not about the subject of repurchases.

Re: which object relates to "them" in a sentence?

I agree, I have not understood enough the meaning of constraction "noun of nouns" at the begining. I thought it was one object, but there were two indeed. One noun is main object that do the action, the second object is giving an extra information to the first noun.
    Thx.
