    Blankets of thick fog

I am wondering if my sentences sound natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

Blankets of thick fog floated above the surface of the frozen river and enfolded me with its whiteness as I stood on the bank. The frost had chased everything and everybody away. Not a bird was to be seen or heard around.

Or "A blanket." Then you can say "its."

    "Around" isn't natural.

    Keep on scribbling!
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
