why do we use " to answering"

    Hello again.
I was wondering about this sentence while reading it online.
There are two general approaches to answering this question. why do we use "to answering"?..Can we write like "In general, there are two approaches in order to answer this question". Is this correct?

    Thanking you in advance.

    Kind regards.

There are two approaches to "something". The something is answering (noun or gerund).

Yes. Here, the "to" is not an infinitive marker; it's directional, like "toward".

It's like "look forward to", which is followed by a noun (or gerund).

Re: why do we use " to answering"

I found three more examples where 'to' is followed by a gerund rather than an infinitive.

'be accustomed to (doing) something'──quoted from http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionar...oing-something
    'be/get used to (doing) something'──quoted from http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionar...oing-something
'take to doing something'──quoted from http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/take-to
