    Hello all

Is the italic blue part noun clause? If yes, are we allowed to use 'that' and 'which' together ?
Because 'believe that' is introduce a noun clause as well.
It is like we use ' I know that which person should answer the question' or 'I know that why they are depressed.'
In that case, which 'WH-clauses' are allowed to use in this way?

"A scientist believes that which leisure activities teens participate in during three years- from playing video games to undertaking more demanding hobbies such as photography and karate- determine which connections survive into adulthood."

I would drop the first "which".
Alternatively, I would use a determiner, e.g., "the", "those" or "any."

Teechar's solutions are good, but I also think which is fine. But I can see how confusing it must be.

A scientist believes something. What does she believe? She believes that which activities teens choose determine which connections survive.

I think the writer is repeating which for purposes of rhetoric and parallelism - the writer's choice.

So, are the following correct?OR we have to avoid using two subordinate conjunctions together.
It is like we use ' I know that which person should answer the question' or 'I know that why they are depressed.'

It's a difficult sentence, which is why Teechar's suggestions are good.

The two whiches are not subordinate conjunctions. They're the first words of noun phrases. I'll rephrase it without the whiches and underline noun phrases. It will say:

She believes that the activities teens choose determine the connections that survive.

    So:

She believes that the activities which teens choose determine the connections which survive.

    So:

She believes that which activities teens choose determine which connections survive.

Now you see why it's such a difficult sentence!

    Thanks so so much .

I got confused as my English teacher told me the sentence "which leisure activities determines" is a noun clause and I think it was a noun clause with two subordinate conjunctions (that and which).

    Thanks again.
