Question by passion not common sense

    Hi, everyone.

    In Cambridge Business English Dictionary:

    pain and suffering
    noun

    definition:
in the US legal system, the emotional suffering caused by one person or
    organization to another person

    sample sentence:
He claimed the jury's pain-and-suffering award of $15.5 million was motivated by passion not common sense.
    ----------------

In the above sample sentence, would it be better to put a comma before 'not'?

Like this: he claimed the jury's pain-and-suffering award of $15.5 million was motivated by passion, not common sense.

(Or ...by passion, not by common sense.)

Because I think it makes the sentence more clear to understand.

PS. If there is any grammatically wrong in my narrative, please correct it. I am grateful for your help.

Re: by passion not common sense

That sentence is quite clear as it is. I can accept it with or without the comma. I can't see how it can potentially be confusing/misinterpreted without the comma.
