    Three feet make(s) a yard. / Twenty miles is(are) a long distance.

    a. "Three feet make a yard."
Can I view three feet as a unit like twenty miles in sentence b, and make the verb become "makes"?

    b. "Twenty miles is a long distance."
Can I view twenty miles a plural noun but not a unit like three feet in sentence a, and make the verb become "are"?

    Thanks!
