    efforts

Why is "efforts" spelled with an "e" and "affordable" with an "a"?
I'm not a teacher or student. I'm here just for fun.

    Re: efforts

The reasons for some spellings are historical. However, in this case, apart from historical reasons, the first syllable of 'efforts' is pronounced /e/, and the first syllable of 'affordable' is /ə/.
