    among others

"He was also the leader of a tribal empire consisting of Huns, Ostrogoths, and Alans among others, on the territory of Central and Eastern Europe."

Would you please explain what "among others" means here?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attila

    Thank you.

    Re: among others

It was a tribal empire that included many different peoples. Huns, Ostrogoths, and Alans are just a few examples. There were more.

    Re: among others

If other tribes are given as among other, by implication do we understand that they are much less important than directly mentioned ones ie Alans, Huns, Ostrogots?

    Thank you.

    Re: among others

Perhaps, yes. Or maybe simply less well-known.

Less well-know and much less important, I think, would be the same practically because if they had played an important role, they would have been well-known.

    Thank you.

That is quite a leap of judgement. There could be 200 different tribes in that group (I totally made this up, of course) but the writer did not want to list all of them. Maybe if you know more about their history, you can draw your own conclusions.

    Re: among others

In any case, there was a reason why the writer chose those three examples. We can only guess what his reasons were.

You do have a tendency to infer what is not necessarily implied.

Does my amendment fit what you had in mind, Piscean?
