The meeting between the American diplomats

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural. Would you please correct my mistakes?

The meeting between the American diplomats and their Russian counterparts passed in a strain atmosphere just as is the current relationship between two countries.

Re: The meeting between the American diplomats

It doesn't work. Try this: ... passed in an atmosphere just as strained as the current relationship between the two countries.
    I am not a teacher.
