    Surrounded by large supermarkets

I am wondering if my sentence is correct. Is it correct to begin it as I did or do I need to start with "Because he was surrounded by large..."?

Surrounded by large supermarkets, Bob had to close his little shop.

It was the shop, not Bob, that was surrounded by the supermarkets.

Though I am not sure if this actually makes a big difference. Whether Bob or his shop is surrounded by large supermarkets, the meaning is still quite transparent. Perhaps, not strictly grammatical but the sentence is not an immediate eyesore.

It makes a difference to learners of English who do not wish to be penalised by their teachers/examiners.
