    type of torture

I am reading Out of Africa by I. Dinesen,

"And under the ordeal Kaninuís heart was slowly breaking, like the bones and tissue of those people who, in old times, were put to the torture of ever increased weights laid on to them."
Please could a teacher or member tell me the meaning of underlined words. I guess it is "crushing" torture but not sure.
    Thanks for your time

    Re: type of torture

Your guess is correct. "Ever increasing" means "continually increasing"; a new weight is added every few minutes.
    I am not a teacher.
