Learning to read and write on your own

Like most people, I learned to read and write by going to school and by being taught by teachers. I was wondering the possibility of learning without being taught by teachers or having a formal education. Most people I doubt would be able to become literate like that but Im saying this because perhaps one of the best if not the best writers in American history did not have a formal education and much of what he learned about reading and writing he did himself.

Re: Learning to read and write on your own

Here's a man who was illiterate, but realised what reading and writing were. He invented an alphabet for his own language, and taught himself and his tribe to read and write. An awe-inspiring achievement.
