The dispute between two party leaders

I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural.

The dispute between two party leaders almost came to blows during the TV debate.

Re: The dispute between two party leaders

It doesn't work for me. It's the party leaders, not the dispute, who almost came to blows (began fighting physically).
    I am not a teacher.

The two party leaders had a dispute during the TV debate, almost coming to blows.
