    Re: science-backed / science-based

    Not necessarily.

If I claim that my new GETTUP drink helps you wake up in the morning, and later discover that it contains caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system, then my claim is backed by science.

However, if I have read scientific reports that caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, and then produce GETTUP, one of the main ingredients of which is caffeine, then my claim that it helps you wake up in the morning is based on science.
