famous number that shows up in many mathematical applications

"Another famous number that shows up in many mathematical applications is the
    exponential function."

What does "show up" mean in the above? Does it mean "come up with" or "occur"?

    Source: Matlab Demystified.

    Thank you.

How could 'come up with' possibly make sense in that sentence?

In which dictionary did you find that definition?
    We encounter with that number.
    That means nothing.

Why is "we encounter with that number" meaningless? Cannot somebody encounter with e number or pi number?

    Thank you.

That's incorrect; "encounter" is a transitive verb.

You can encounter the number e or the number π. If you do, you have had an encounter with the number. You cannot "encounter with" something.
    I am not a teacher.

Does this mean that a transitive verb never take "with"? If so would you please explain simply why?

    Thank you.
