we can reference in Matlab by typing exp (a)

"We can reference e in MATLAB by typing exp(a) which gives us the value of e^a."

    Does "we can reference" mean

    1. We can use
    2. We can apply
    3. We can refer

Which of the above for the original are correct and retain the original meaning?

    Thank you.

The writer means "gain access to" or simply "use".

Would you please explain why refer and apply wouldnot be the intended one? Look this example: "Refer to the application at the beginning of the lesson."

This example about refer comes from at the beginning of chapter of a texbook. At the beginning of the chapter an application is explained. After this, a question is asked. At the beginning of the question it says "Refer to the application at the beginning of the lesson 7."

From this example I understand that refer=use and fits correctly here.

    Thank you.
