cut large steps into the sides into the hillsides

Farmers here cut large steps into the sides into the hillsides and created island to get more land for growing crops.

What does the underlined part mean? Can you paraphrase it for me?

    Thanks!

    Jason

Re: cut large steps into the sides into the hillsides

Sloped fields cannot be successfully cultivated because water needed for irrigation runs off.

Those large steps they cut are called terraces.

    For example

If you have quoted the text exactly as it was written, the original is full of mistakes. We can guess what the intended meaning may have been, but it's not possible to know for sure.

What is the source of the quoted text, jasonlulu?

    'island' should be 'islands'.
