    took 30 hours to emerge

    Hello everybody!
    Don't try this at home.
A Connecticut woman successfully delivered her baby, a little girl named Stella, alone in her bathroom earlier this month.
When 34-year-old Erica Bovino went into labor at 1 a.m. May 6, she believed she had plenty of time. After all, her 3-year-old son, who was sleeping in a nearby room, took 30 hours to emerge.

Does it mean that her 3-year-old son needed 30 hours of sleep/Does it mean that her 3-year-old son needed to sleep (for) 30 hours?
    Thank you.

    No! It means:
1- The boy was sleeping while his mum was giving birth to his sister, Stella.
2- It had taken 30 hours to deliver the boy (3 years beforehand). So the mother thought that she will also have plenty of time to get to the hospital to deliver her second baby.

She had been in labour for 30 hours before giving birth to the boy.
