    The second variation, with is corrected to it, works fine. The first doesn't work because we don't put also before the verb in this usage.

    we don't put also before the verb in this usage.
    In these two examples, we put "also" before the verb, though.

    Not only
    does running your own business carry an inherent element of risk, but also it requires a great amount of money.
    Not only does running your own business carry an inherent element of risk, but it also requires a great amount of money.
