    Prefer

Would it be wrong - or maybe sound strange - if I said "I prefer traveling by train to by bus"? Would "I prefer to travel by train rather than by bus" sound more natural?

My question is because of the "to" followed by the preposition "by".

    Yes and yes.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

    Re: Prefer

I'll add a third "yes". The first sentence is wrong and would sound strange. The second sentence is fine.

    Re: Prefer

Another option, I think, could be: "I favor train rides over bus rides."

I think you could remove rather.
