I confuse words apprehension, appreciation, comprehension, hold, grasp meaning understanding. Would you please help me distinguish among them.

Clearly grasp of language=understanding of language but I cannot determine if these are also identical to apprehension of language, appreciation of language, comprehension of language, hold of language?

None of those work. If you're talking about recognising the use and meaning of an item of vocabulary, then you could use the verb understand.
