You are expecting an urgent telephone call

You are expecting an urgent telephone call from home, but the phone does not ring. Speculate about why you don't get the call

    a) What's the mattter with this phone? It has to ring.

    b) I suppose they have forgetten I am waiting here for a call.

    c) How I wish that phone would ring.

    d) I can't wait any longer. Something bad must have happened. I'll call the police.

    e) There might be something wrong with the phone. I'd better go to the post office and check.

It's wanted from us to find proper expression for the situation.

I cannot determine. All a, b, c, d, e seems possible for me. Would you please explain?

    Thank you.

They don't all contain speculation about why you're not getting the call. For example "How I wish that phone would ring" gives no possible reason. Do you understand "speculation"?

Not much but only d and e gives reason. So which one could be?

    Thank you.

Only one of the five option is correct. And there is no key for that question.

    Thank you.

That information should have been in post #1, along with the source of that question.

Sorry for forgeting the source, I thought it was clear for one option. Source: Kpds İngilizce.

Would you please reevaluate the question?

    Thank you.

There is no one single best answer. They all work. None of them are mutually exclusive, although they'd be used in different contexts.

In the US, the post office example doesn't make logical sense, but I know that in some countries phones are tied in with postal services.

But in #2, Raymott claims that they don't all contain speculation about why somebody is not getting the call.

    Thank you.

    Only b), d), and, e) contain speculation.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

If only one option is inteded to be correct, then is the question badly prepared?

    Thank you.
