    past continuous/perfect continuous

    What is the difference between the sentences of each group?:

    I was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang.
    I had been having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang.


    Caroline was skiing when she broke her leg.
    Caroline had been skiing when she broke her leg.

    Only the first sentence in each group is correct.
