Hello.

I am trying to tell people about me on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites that are not extremely formal, unlike LinkedIn or other sites.

Is it acceptable to tell people that I was a "pisshead," or in Texas A&M University, a sophomore involved in the Corps?

I think some people might find this word funny and make my profile less formal.

I'm wondering if you think this slang word is okay to use with other people.

Thanks for your time.

Are you asking about pisshead or sophomore?

In BrE, pisshead is a strong word used usually as a derogatory label for someone who drinks heavily. It's not very amusing to me. I suggest you find an alternative.

My hunch is that most people who are not familiar with the culture of the Texas A&M community will consider the word 'pisshead' to be offensive. What you think is funny today may create a negative impression from a future employer! You can't go wrong in posting that you are a sophomore at Texas A&M.

I strongly agree with both jutfrank and Amigos4. It has nothing to do with BrE vs AmE. In both dialects it is a bad idea. Don't do it.

Note that this thread's title should have been Writing "About Me" Blurb - Want to Use Military Slang. Without the quotation marks, the reader would wonder if you were going to write about a "me blurb" or write an "about me" blurb. There may be other possible interpretations I haven't thought of.

I honestly think in BrE that if you said you used to be a bit of a pisshead on Facebook, it wouldn't be taken that seriously. However, it might not be a great way to build networks.

I wouldn't necessarily not take it seriously but I would certainly assume that you were not hoping to use your Facebook profile for professional purposes.
