To some extent, this problem is an integral part of modern life.

    Hi,

I have several question on the following paragraph, and sorry for asking a lot of questions:

"To some extent, this problem is an integral part of modern life. As well as making it possible for people to eat more, a prosperous mechanized society means that most people take less exercise. Despite health campaigns encouraging people to eat fruit and vegetables, there seems little change of a change in attitude. On the contrary, the situation may even be getting worse. In spite of walking to work or to do our shopping, we spend our time sitting in cars, and despite government health warnings, we eat more and more so-called ‘junk’ food and drink more and more high-calories drinks. To some extent we can blame obesity problems on pressurized marketing which glamorizes certain foods and drinks, but, on the other hand, individuals themselves must learn to be responsible for their own health. It is that word ‘learn’ which is important, above all.
For if we were better informed about the risks involved in excessive consumption of food and fizzy drinks and alcohol, we might at least be able to help ourselves. This is why the problem of obesity is also the problem of education. "

1)What does this line mean? Does it mean “Obesity is not the only problem of modern life, it instead is part of it, so there are other kinds of disease-related issues in modern life”.
To some extent, this problem is an integral part of modern life.

2)Can the position of “as well as” in a sentence interchangeable, if yes does it suggest the same meaning?
As well as making it possible for people to eat more, a prosperous mechanized society means that most people take less exercise

A prosperous mechanized society means that most people take less exercise, as well as making it possible for people to eat more.

3)Is the following sentence parallel? It is a bit confusing
In spite of walking to work or to do our shopping.

Can it be analyzed in this way to be parallel structure?

In spite of walking to work or walking to do our shopping.

    4) Can we revise the sentences below by adding apostrophe’s:
Despite health campaigns encouraging people to eat fruit and vegetables,...

Despite health campaigns’ encouraging people to eat fruit and vegetables,...

In my opinion, when the writer says "this problem" he is combining lack of exercise with eating too much junk food.

    Dear moderators,
Could you please delete this thread. I want to post each question in a separate thread. I think I had to do it when I wanted to start this thread.

We'll do so if Tarheel doesn't mind. He has already replied to this thread!

For now, I'll close the thread. Once a thread has responses, we try hard not to delete. You can start again, posting each question in its own thread.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
