    swear off and give up

    Hello!!

Is there any difference between swear off and give up?

    For instance:

"I decided to _____ burgers forever"

Both phrasal verbs, in this meaning, are interchangeable?

    Thanks.

I'm not familiar with swear off.

    give up works very well.

In British English, you can use swear off when you quit something- people swear off alcohol.

We use it in American English too. I'd say swear off has a slightly stronger sense than give up - that you will feel like you've failed more profoundly if you revert to a habit you'd sworn off than one you'd merely given up.
