to the next eight cells on its left

Each eight-bit character transferred to the processor register is preceded by a shift of the previous character to the next eight cells on its left

I don't know how to interpret "to the next eight cells on its left", and what "to" means and "its" stands for?
    Thanks helping out.
I am Taiwanese, and I want to improve my English. If you see any mistake about my sentence, please correct as much as you can.

Re: to the next eight cells on its left

Suppose you have two sets of "cells" (which I assume to be single-bit locations):

    XXXX XXXX 0101 1010

Before the operation, the processor register contains 0101 1010. After the operation, these two sets of cells look like this:

    0101 1010 XXXX XXXX

The contents of the processor register have been shifted to the eight cells to its left.
    I am not a teacher.
