    What are they?

Are both pairs of sentences correct? If yes, is there any difference between 1 and 2? (To me it seems the second sentence in 2 is wrong.)

    1. “Who are these?” “They are my sisters.”

“What are these?” “They are my books.”

    2. “Who are they?” “They are my sisters.”
“What are they?” “They are my books.”
If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

    Re: What are they?

The first sentence in 1 is wrong.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

    Re: What are they?

You could fix that first sentence by adding something like 'people' or 'women' after 'these'.
