halls of residence or halls of residences?

    Which variant is correct?

    1. The students live in the University halls of residences.
    2. The students live in the University halls of residence.

If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

    2. is correct. But don't capitalise 'university'.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

Maybe it's a regional difference, but in AmE I'd expect to hear 'university residence halls'.

I can't decide if 'halls of residence' sounds like a mangled word order, or merely pompous.

I'm used to hearing "hall of fame" which makes "hall of residence" sound overtly formal.

"Halls of residence" is natural and common in BrE.
