    Verb consistency

Is this sentence correct? If so why there is an agreement although the word became is a past simple and the word paying is an adjective.

The audience became emotional, paying tribute with a never-ending applause, unable to believe that a living legend would retire suddenly.

What I know is that comma used to separate nouns, adjectives, and verbs.

    Examples

I bought a pen , five books, and three pencils. (all the words in red are nouns )

She is kind, beautiful, and thoughtful teacher. ( all the words in green are adjectives)

I went to buy a book, I washed the car, and I met my brother-in-law. (all words in blue are in simple past tense)

    Thank you.

No, "paying" is not an adjective. It is a present participle acting as an adverb.

They have many other uses as well.

    Re: Verb consistency

    Thank you so much.

could you please mention other uses?

I do not understand how present participle is used as adverb. Is the word tribute verb?

I know one usage of present participle to which I use it as an adjective like

    A boring day.
