Bob didn't realise what kind of person his

I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

Bob didn't realise what kind of person his girlfriend, Anita, was until he saw her drinking heavily.

Bob didn't realise realize what kind of person his girlfriend, Anita, was until he saw her drinking heavily.

The sentence is fine but it is awkward to read with the appositive "Anita" in it.

Bob didn't realize what kind of person his girlfriend was until he saw her drinking heavily.

Bob didn't realize what kind of person Anita was until he saw her drinking heavily.

    These sentences read very smoothly.

What I might do if this was part of a larger passage would be to identify Anita as being Bob's girlfriend in an earlier sentence. You then avoid the appositive all together.

Experience is recognizing a mistake the second time you make it.

    Lynxear,

Thank you for your corrections. I just want to add that "realise" is BrE.

Of course, you are right. Canadian English is a mixture of BE and AE and I keep forgetting to check out both. We generally use the AE spelling of this particular word here. Sorry about that!
